Pro-Jects Debut PRO Turntable Hits The Ground Running

Just in time for its thirtieth anniversary, Austrian manufacturer Pro-Ject is launching the Debut PRO an outstanding record player at an unbeatable price. Let's take a closer look...

Since 1991 Pro-Ject has been winning over audiophiles over with its turntables at a price point that could mislead some. The shape and design of the Pro-Ject turntables have always emanated simplicity in their aesthetics which is mainly determined by their functionality. The manufacturer utilizes durable materials such as MDF, steel, aluminum, glass, and carbon, ensuring the best possible playback quality.

Pro-Ject has stuck true to its principles, which may have some of its pricier competitors sweating under the collar.

The belt-driven Pro-Ject Debut PRO is a so-called single-board player. With this construction method, all elements are mounted on a, in its case, slim frame made of MDF. The rotation speed of the decoupled synchronous motor can be changed by means of a toggle switch.

Using the enclosed drive belt, the turntable can optionally be set to 78 revolutions per minute. In this way, even shellac records can be listened to with a suitable cartridge. Furthermore, thanks to a new type of motor suspension, motor vibrations are avoided so that they do not reach the cartridge.

Turntables

The precision-balanced, die-cast aluminum platter is anti-magnetic. For this reason, the Debut PRO is also suitable for use with MC cartridge systems. In addition, a ring on the inside of the aluminum platter made of TPE (thermoplastic elastomer) dampens all resonances and is also able to minimize wow and flutter.

Tonearm
The Debut PRO’s one-piece 8.6-inch hybrid tonearm is made of a carbon aluminum composite. Due to its damping properties, aluminum is particularly well suited to prevent unwanted vibrations. At the same time, the carbon layer gives the tonearm a high degree of rigidity. The tonearm is thus also suitable for use with higher-quality MC cartridges.

In addition, the tonearm has the possibility to adjust the azimuth and the vertical tracking angle (VTA). Likewise, the tonearm height can be adjusted continuously, which allows the use of different turntable mats or other cartridges. The tonearm bearing, milled from a single block of aluminum, is a completely new design that ensures free and fluid movement of the tonearm with precise tracking.

Pick it PRO Pickup
The newly developed Pick it PRO pickup is another outstanding addition compared to previous devices. The pickup was developed in cooperation with Ortofon and came factory preset so that nothing stands in the way of immediate music enjoyment. Delivering a lively, robust sound, the Pick-it PRO convinces especially through its wide dynamic range.

Final Thoughts
Pro-Ject’s new Debut PRO turntable is a newcomer of a special kind. It is suitable, not least in conjunction with the Pick it PRO cartridge due to its high sound and material quality and the more than fair price for both hi-fi enthusiasts and vinyl beginners. Taking into account the various possibilities for upgrading the player, for example, with an MC cartridge, the Debut PRO can be seen as a long-term investment, which, in conjunction with the right equipment, will certainly provide most people with an enjoyable listening experience for a long time to come.
