BOWERS & WILKINS 702 S2

With the 700 series, Bowers & Wilkins has closed the gap between the reference series, the 800 D3, the CM and the 600 series. Technically, the new loudspeakers have inherited a lot from their big siblings, the 800 series, and they impress with a natural and balanced sonic image.

  • Carbon Dome ™ tweeter with aluminum housing and Nautilus tube technology for fascinating resolution capacity
  • Continuum cone delivers pristine performance
  • Aerofoil ™ cone unit for deep, dynamic bass

With three dedicated Aerofoil™-Profile bass drivers and a solid body tweeter housing on top, the 702 S2 brings the goosebump-inducing clarity and detail of studio-quality sound to your home audio set-up.

Solid Body tweeter
Milled from a solid block of aluminium, the solid body tweeter housing design creates an acoustically optimised housing for the tweeter – one that’s exceptionally inert and resistant to resonances.

Carbon Dome™ tweeter
Carbon Dome tweeters are a brand new technology purpose-built for the 700 Series. Delivering a dramatic improvement on the aluminium double-dome tweeter, they raise the breakup threshold to 47kHz, for pinpoint imaging accuracy and detail.

Continuum™ Cone
First introduced with the 800 Series Diamond, the Continuum cone represents the biggest step-change in midrange performance since Kevlar. Its woven, coated material provides highly controlled break-up, resulting in a more open, neutral midrange.

Decoupled midrange
The midrange driver in the floor-standers feature a decoupled design, adapted from a similar system in the 800 Series Diamond. Decoupling reduces cabinet colouration, and boosts midrange clarity.

MARANTZ RUBY

With the KI Ruby Series Marantz celebrates the tuning guru and brand ambassador Ken Ishiwata’s 40th anniversary at Marantz. Couples that reach their 40th anniversary, celebrate this special day of their relationship with what is known as a Ruby Anniversary, a day that might be marked with an exchange of the precious red gems. Company Marantz and key designer Ken Ishiwata are making their forty years of partnership with this limited edition special series featuring an engraved signature from Ishiwata completed by a precious stone.

PM-KI Ruby
The PM-KI Ruby boasts 100-watt-per-channel and uses a discrete two-stage design with separate power supplies for the pre-amplifier and power amplifier sections, and takes a page out the flagship PM-10 amplifier’s book by featuring a moving-magnet and moving-coil phono stage with Marantz’s new phono EQ circuitry design.

Building on its analogue-only connectivity are six RCA inputs and two outputs, along with a 6.3mm front panel headphone output, while Marantz’s proprietary HDAM (Hyper Dynamic Amplifier Module) technology and copper-plated chassis are familiar inclusions on the spec sheet.

The PM-KI Ruby at a glance

  • Engineered and extensively tuned by a team led by Ken Ishiwata, drawing on more than 65 years of Marantz amplifier design knowledge
  • Marantz high-resolution preamplifier stage using proprietary HDAM technology
  • Switching power amplifier design derived from flagship PM-10 amplifier
  • Generous output: 100W + 100W (8 ohm), 200W + 200W (4 ohm)
  • Fully-discrete two-stage design for signal purity, with separate power supplies for preamp and power amplifier sections to reduce interference
  • Toroidal transformer dedicated to preamp for clarity and precision sound
  • Dedicated headphone amplifier with alldiscrete construction featuring HDAM-SA2
  • Linear volume control with new electric volume system
  • Laser-engraved ‘Ken Ishiwata’ signature and Ruby motif, marking Ken Ishiwata’s 40 years with Marantz

SA-KI Ruby
The SA-KI Ruby SACD/CD player, meanwhile, features a new disc mechanism, the ‘SACDM-3’, for SACD, CD and CD-ROM playback. Again it draws on company’s flagship machine, the SA-10, but unlike its sibling incorporates digital connectivity.

There’s an asynchronous USB input capable of handling PCM files up to 32bit/384kHz as well as DSD 11.2MHz, with all files being upconverted to DSD for playback. Optical and coaxial inputs and outputs, and a USB type-A input, are also included on the rear panel.

Internally the SA-KI Ruby will carry a unique Marantz DAC with MMM stream and MMM conversion.

The SACD/CD drive is also unique. A quality mechanism developed entirely by Marantz because the brand could not source a drive of the quality required for its top end SACD players.

The SA-KI Ruby will also feature a full, discrete current feedback amplifier with w/HDAM-SA technology.

Parts used inside the SA-KI Ruby are top calibre. They include low noise complimentary transistors, high precision MELF resistors, high-grade film capacitors, low ESR polymer capacitors and get this: unique, Marantz custom designed electrolytic and block capacitors.

Marantz engineers also paid plenty of attention in finding ways to isolate the analogue circuits from the noise-prone digital circuits.
