The Sony VPL-VW290ES: A 4K Entry Level Projector

Last year, Sony already updated its home cinema projectors with the mid-range models with the VPL-VW590ES and VPL-VW790ES and equipped them with the X1 processor optimized for projectors. With the VPL-VW290ES, including the X1 image processor, the upgrade of the entry-level VPL-VW270ES, which was released in 2018, will finally be launched on the market this May.

Sony promises a light output of 1,500 lumens with the new 4K SXRD home theater projector, just like the predecessor. The light source is also a classic incandescent lamp instead of a laser. The focus of the technical development of the VPL-VW290ES is primarily on the “X1” image processor. The high-precision video processing technology, already known from the Bravia TVs, in combination with forward-thinking functions such as the Dynamic HDR Enhancer and Super Resolution, delivers even higher contrast and sharper images than before. The VPL-VW290ES is also equipped with Sony’s pioneering SXRD panel technology. Due to this, colors can be displayed even richer and black tones even deeper. Other features such as Reality Creation and especially 4K Motionflow can significantly improve image sharpness by analyzing each pixel without risking digital noise. By adding images, Sony’s Motionflow technology reduces blur and enables smooth motion even in 4K. This makes the projector the perfect candidate for reproducing sports scenes. Besides home theater use, the 4K projector is also suitable for gaming. Within a mode optimized for video games, the image response speed can be improved considerably by reducing the input lag.TITEL

Final Thoughts

The eagerly awaited upgrade of the predecessor model VPL-VW270ES should make the hearts of home theater enthusiasts beat faster due to the variety of new features made possible by the new chipset. Home theater projectors from Sony are – as the name already suggests – initially primarily intended for use in real home theaters. However, the new VPL-VW290ES also cuts a good figure in the living room. In addition, it is interesting for gamers due to its “lag” freedom. The projector will be available in living room-friendly white as well as in classic black. It can be pre-ordered now and is expected to go into initial delivery in mid-May 2021.
