Samsung’s The Premiere Laser 4K Smart Projector

With The Premiere, Samsung expands its TV lifestyle product portfolio, consisting of The Serif, The Frame, and The Terrace, among others, with a 4K ultra-short-throw projector in two versions. The LSP7T and LSP9T models can actually be called a "premiere" in the sense that they are Samsung's first projectors.

Anyone who has been faced with the question of whether to buy a TV or a projector knows that both formats have their advantages and disadvantages. Most modern TVs, often referred to as “Smart TVs” offer plenty of convenience with a variety of additional features. Whereas, compared to most projectors, they can be described as rather impractical even beyond the 85-inch limit and are difficult to integrate into most environments. However, in some situations, especially when you have a “real” cinema experience in mind within your own four walls, these are exactly the dimensions at which it starts to be enjoyable. On the other hand, a projector setup can also be a challenge and often involves unsightly cabling. In the past, a compromise between image size and ease of use was always necessary. In the following, we want to find out whether Samsung is able to close this compromise.

“The Premiere” is available in two versions, which differ in terms of the maximum screen diagonal depending on the number of installed laser light sources. While the LSP7T model with one laser allows a maximum screen diagonal of 120 inches, the LSP9T model with three lasers even reaches up to 130 inches in diagonal. In 16:9 format, the LSP9T thus has a 330 cm screen diagonal, 288 cm width and 162 cm height. At which point we finally move outside the usual TV size dimensions. In contrast to conventional 4K projectors, the 4K ultra short-distance projector “The Premiere” does not have to be precisely aligned on the ceiling at the other end of the room. Instead, the LSP9T only needs to be 11 inches away from the projection surface for an image over 100 inches diagonal. So instead of a lot of space, all you need next to the projector is a blank white wall. Similar in size to a soundbar, “The Premiere” fits discreetly into your living environment in “offline mode”, instead of a big ugly screen, with its noble fabric covering, designed by the Danish textile designer KVADRAT.

Even at these impressive image sizes, the projectors immerse you in a bright, high-contrast 4K image. Triple laser technology gives the LSP9T a peak brightness of up to 2,800 ANSI lumens. It can also call itself the world’s first HDR10+ certified projector. HDR10+ content provides scene-based metadata for an optimally adjusted HDR image. Regardless of the brightness of the scene, the LSP9T delivers outstanding contrast values in the transition from bright to dark scenes and convinces with its triple laser not least with rich colors. In addition, “The Premiere” is the first projector of its kind to support Samsung’s well-known “Filmmaker Mode”, a picture mode that allows you to experience movies in the director’s intended setting.

The Premiere

In addition to its role as a powerful projector, “The Premiere” also performs all the other classic tasks of a TV. The clear Smart TV platform of Samsung’s “Tizen” operating system features a familiar wealth of apps from various streaming providers as well as a variety of mobile connection functions such as Tap View and Screen Mirroring. Using a compatible smartphone, mobile content can be mirrored directly onto the living room wall at the touch of a button. While integrated speakers are a matter of course for most TVs, most commercially available projectors do not have an internal sound system. With “The Premiere”, however, the uncomplicated TV viewing experience with projector image size is rounded off with a powerful 40-watt sound. The 4.2 sound system features powerful integrated bass speakers and Acoustic Beam Surround Sound, delivering the entire home theater package with just one remote control, without complex wiring or tedious setup.
