Mark Levinson’s No. 5206 & No. 5302: Where Fine Sounds Are At Home

In March, we presented the No. 5105 turntables from Mark Levinson's 5000 series, which you can read more on here. In that article, we briefly mentioned both the No. 5206 High-End preamplifiers and the No. 5302 stereo power amplifier. Now it's high time to present these two outstanding devices in the form of a separate article.

Already in the past, the goal of the manufacturer Mark Levinson could be noticed increasingly, not only to preserve audio signals in the best possible way but at the same time to exploit their full potential. Using novel patented innovations, they always manage to combine the best of analog and digital worlds — not least in their amplifiers. Their undisputed expertise, as well as their distinct design philosophy, is once again illustrated by their new brand offensive in the form of the 5000 Series expansion, which clearly highlights the high level of detail available when listening to music with Mark Levinson.

No. 5206

Mark Levinson’s No. 5206 Class A preamplifier features two patents based on Mark Levinson’s wealth of technical experience. First, as with the Mark Levinson 500 Series products, the No. 5206 features the award-winning PurePath technology. This proprietary approach to circuit design delivers uncompromising musical purity as well as an overall increase in performance. Based on the topography of the No.5805 integrated amplifier, the Class No. 5206 preamplifier’s single-unit design provides additional space for the addition of several other innovations. As a stand-alone unit, it has been possible to reduce noise to a minimum by means of extensive internal shielding. Furthermore, the physical separation of the input relays allows for an unsurpassed Class A sound quality, capable of making every note sound as it was intended. The preamplifier also features a custom 32-bit/384 kHz Precision Link II digital-to-analog converter (DAC) with quad DSD capability. This is capable of accurately reproducing audio signals while maintaining excellent digital audio quality. A high-quality hybrid phono stage also allows the connection of turntables with MM as well as MC cartridges. The No. 5206 can thus perfectly preserve both digital and analog audio signals. This in turn allows the premium preamp to be used optimally as a pivot point for any audio system. In pass-thru mode, the preamp is also suitable as a home theater processor. In addition, the preamp can also be controlled via Bluetooth (including Aptx HD support). Certainly, the question could be asked at this point why an upper-class manufacturer like Mark Levinson should use the compressing transmission method. In the manufacturer’s own words, easy and fast access to music via mobile devices allows for easier sharing of music with friends and family. Using a Class A high-pass subwoofer filter, the crossover frequency of the subwoofers can be accurately adjusted. Controlling the preamp is convenient thanks to Mark Levinson’s proprietary “5Kontrol APP”. The high-current analog Class-A headphone output allows all headphones to be driven directly and is able to bring out their full potential.

No. 5302

As the last instance of the signal flow before the loudspeakers, the powerful, also completely discrete dual-mono amplifier of class AB with 135 W per channel into 8 ohms (; 2x 270 W into 4 ohms) brings the necessary power for the output to loudspeakers of different impedances. Just like the No. 5602 preamplifier, the No. 5302 makes use of the space gained inside by specializing — in its case as a power amplifier. A larger power supply than that of the integrated amplifier provides the amplifier with just the right amount of power at just the right moment, allowing explosive dynamic peaks to be achieved and revealing details that might otherwise have remained hidden. Using different windings of the transformer, which have been optimized for mono, two No. 5302s can optionally be bridged with combined power for mono operation. At 4 ohms, one of them would thus reach an outstanding power of 550W. While the gain in stereo mode amounts to 25.8 dB, it reaches a peak value of up to 31.8 dB in monaural bridging mode. In addition, the same path opens up completely new possibilities, such as separate bi-amping, among others. To counteract the heat generated by the Class AB amplification, the product designers of the American manufacturer have come up with a fancy external heat sink system, which not only keeps the powerhouse at temperature but at the same time also looks good. A classic case of the design principle “form follows function”. At this point, Mark Levinson’s renunciation of frills and their attention to excellence become clear once again.
The front of the power amp is adorned by an elegant glass display. Two solid aluminum handles add a rustic touch. Combining the finest materials, technology, and craftsmanship, the No. 5302 blends in perfectly with the rest of the 5000 family, not least visually. Of course, the No.5302 amplifier convinces not only with its visual finesse but also with its sound. In typical Mark Levinson fashion, it builds up an extensive soundscape, which is characterized by an extended low bass reproduction and an outstanding pitch definition.

Final Thoughts

Both the No. 5206 preamplifiers and the No. 5302 high-end amplifier offer Mark Levinson’s customary performance and quality with exceptional flexibility. As gems of precision engineering and exceptional design, they shine in particular for their commitment to impeccable looks, musicality, and open-mindedness. Because of their multitude of applicable technical innovations, Mark Levinson once again manages to deliver sonic fireworks at the point where technology meets art.

If one or, like us, both of the devices appealed to you, be on the lookout for a video, which is expected to be released next week and will be linked here at that time. In that video, our colleagues from the store will introduce the two amplifiers in more detail. Otherwise, if you have any further questions, suggestions, or other concerns, we are available to you as usual via the familiar channels.
